- Kashgar, Samarqand, and Herat, distant oases of the illustrious Silk Road.
- The ancient Silk Road is undoubtedly the most fascinating multi-cultural, socio- economic and geographic link to times past on the Asian subcontinent.

Stretching more than 4000 miles across Asia to the Middle East and what was then the Roman Empire, this famous route was an essential path to economic prosperity for traders and scholars seeking to distribute their goods & wares as well as intellectual and technological transfer from eastern to western worlds. The Silk Road journey is becoming increasingly popular with adventurers and global sightseers alike who are looking for the road less travelled. The World Tourism Organization is actively promoting the development and promotion of Silk Road tourism initiatives amongst the South Asian nations.

Discover the special charms and allure of historic Central Asia on a Mountain Travel’s tour through this magnificent region. A rich mosaic of ethnic, religious and geographic diversity, this vast area was once renowned as an international base for great scholars, culture, and power.

Travelling through some of the highest peaks on the planet to the lowest and most remote desert regions and isolated villages in between, our tour is a fascinating look at the nomadic peoples and political heritage that shaped this vast area.

Our 23-day tour journeys west from Islamabad to the ancient city of Peshawar near Afghanistan and then on to the historically-interesting Swat Valley, where Alexander the Great and his men once visited. Our travels continue north along the Karakoram Highway into western China through to Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan and finally to Uzbekistan, where we highlight the trip with a visit to Samarqand, once the hub of Islamic treasures and the true crossroads of Eastern and Western influences along the infamous Silk Road.

Until recently, this area, which is comprised of five former Soviet republics along with remote Netherlands of both western China and northern Pakistan, was largely isolated and inaccessible.

No longer a best-kept secret, Central Asia, nonetheless, remains one of the last undiscovered regions on the planet of such incredible and historic significance. Mountain Travels Pakistan operates this tour series in conjunction with Elder-treks in Toronto, Canada.
